Picasa’s official blog has been reactivated by Google representatives, just to announce the “death” of the service. “ We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than dividing our efforts across two different products.”, wrote Anil Sabharwal, the director of Google Photos.

The reason why Picasa was dropped out is highlighted in the statement from above and makes a lot of sense. Recently, Google Photos gained many functionalities and more and more people are using the service to synchronize their photos in the cloud.

If you had albums in Picasa, you should not worry. They will be automatically transferred to Google Photos and can be accessed with your Google account.

Those who don’t want their photos to be transferred to the new service, they will still be able to download and view them in Picasa, but will no longer receive software updates and will not be able to upload new ones.

However, until May 1, if you want to upload images in Picasa, you can do that, but on March 15, the desktop application will no longer be available for download and it will not receive any updates.

“We apologize for any inconvenience create by this transition, but we assure you that we do this in order to give you the best experience”, wrote Sabharwal, on Picasa blog.
