A few changes to the settings of your device can help you improve the battery performance of your iPhone. Consider all or a few of the below tweaks to improve battery life:

Customize Location Services

Location services can take up a lot of battery because it is a feature that is always on and is trying to get information regarding your current location all the time. The problem is that lots of apps want to know your location these days. The truth is that you don’t really need all your apps to know your location. So choose the apps that can use Location Services and also make sure that your apps use this feature only when you are using the app so that it doesn’t run in the background.

  • Tap on Settings
  • Go to Privacy
  • Tap on Location Services
  • You will be able to select when an app uses Location Services from here

With location services customized on your device, you will notice a difference in battery usage.

Turn off background app refresh

You can have an app refresh itself continually in the background so that information is up to date all of the time or you can choose to limit background refresh so that your apps are refreshed only when you access them. While the first option sounds tempting, it is a definite way of losing out on your battery life. Switch off background app refresh to save battery.

  • Launch the Settings app
  • Tap on general
  • Go to Background App Refresh and toggle it off

Reduce the widgets on the lock screen

The lock screen can now be filled with widgets to help you stay updated. This feature is available for iOS10 users. If you are using a lot of widgets on the lock screen then there is a chance that you are noticing higher battery consumption. This is because the widgets constantly update themselves to provide you with the latest data.

  • Swipe right from the lock screen to bring up the widgets page
  • Scroll down and tap on Edit
  • Your phone will prompt you to unlock the device so that you can make changes to the widgets
  • When you tap the red circle next to a widget, it will bring up a delete button allowing you to delete that widget from your lock screen.
  • Tap on Done

Removing the widgets will be helpful for anyone who wants to save battery.

Switch off Raise to Wake if you don’t use it

Raise to Wake will switch on your phone’s screen every time you pick it up. If you do not find much use for it or if you would like to save some battery by switching on the screen yourself only when you want it then follow these steps

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap on Display and Brightness
  • Look up Raise to Wake and slide it off

Turn on Reduce Motion

Animations that have been introduced with iOS10 use quite a bit of battery. If you are in the habit of sending and receiving lots of these animations then you may want to turn down Motion to save some battery.

  • Go to Settings and head to General
  • Tap on Accessibility
  • Choose Reduce Motion and switch it off

Tip: Battery Calibration

You may not come across the need to calibrate your phone’s battery very often. If your phone, however, begins to show weaker battery performance after an upgrade, then a calibration can help in setting this back to normality. Battery calibration should not be done very frequently, but when done after major iOS upgrades, or when your phone’ battery performance is very poor, then it can have positive results. Calibration helps in your iPhone showing the current battery percentage on the screen. Follow these steps to calibrate your phone’s battery:

  • Use your iPhone till the battery lasts and allow it to power off on its own. You can use battery intensive apps or features to expedite the process of battery drainage.
  • Let your phone stay powered off for about an hour so that the battery drain is complete. You can let it sit overnight if you do not need your phone in the night so that the battery is properly drained off.
  • Plug your iPhone to the charger and let it power up.
  • Charge it till it reaches 100% and then let it stay on charge for another hour
  • Unplug the phone and use it like you usually do till the battery is entirely drained out again. Make sure that you do not charge your phone during this time.
  • Plug your powered off the device to the charger, power it on and let the battery reach 100% again. Then leave it connected to the charger for another hour before you unplug your iPhone.

This will re-calibrate your phone and allow you to get the most out of your phone’s battery.

iPhone users have complained of battery problems for a long time. Most of the iPhones have had battery related issues and almost all of these issues could be fixed by the above solutions. iPhone 6s was hit by a problem which was dubbed batterygate by users and reporters online. The problem was that one of the components of the battery for the iPhone 6s had been exposed to ambient air for longer than expected. This caused unwanted battery issues. iPhone 6s users had the chance to get their phone’s battery replaced to fix the problem.
